Ballyteige was built in 1900 as shooting lodge and country retreat for the eminent Dublin Surgeon, John McArdle. The house is situated at the meeting point of three interlocking valleys along the River Ow. Extensive planting was carried out in the late Victorian era that has, a hundred years on, left a legacy of mature trees and shrubs. Today Ballyteige boasts a small arboretum of Pines, Redwoods, Monkey Puzzles, Limes, Azaleas and Rhododendrons. Intermingled amongst these introduced species are a rich variety of native trees, notably two large belts of oak forest.
